Choosing air conditioning for a furniture showroom or large retail space is completely different to a standard office or home. Get it wrong and you’ll have hot spots, noise complaints from customers, and energy bills that eat into your margins. Get it right and your showroom becomes a destination — a place customers want to spend time in.
Here’s what 25 years of installing commercial air conditioning in Sydney’s retail spaces has taught us.
1. Size the system for your actual footprint — not the rule of thumb
Most air conditioning contractors use a simple square metre calculation to size a system. For a furniture showroom, this almost always results in an undersized system. Why? Because furniture showrooms have:
- High ceilings — double the height means double the air volume to condition
- Glass frontages — enormous heat load from sun exposure
- High foot traffic during peak periods — body heat from customers adds significantly to cooling load
- Open plan layouts — no walls to contain cool air
A properly designed system uses a full heat load calculation — not a shortcut formula.
2. Noise matters more than you think
A noisy air conditioning system in a furniture showroom undermines the premium atmosphere you’re trying to create. Customers notice. Choose systems with low indoor unit noise ratings (below 40dB for premium retail) and ensure the outdoor units are positioned where they won’t be heard from inside the showroom.
3. Plan around your trading hours, not your contractor’s schedule
Installation of a commercial system in an active showroom takes 3-5 days minimum. A good commercial contractor will schedule this work to minimise impact on your trading — weekend work, early morning starts, phased installation that keeps part of the showroom operational. If a contractor can’t accommodate your trading hours, find one who can.
4. Think about the maintenance contract from day one
A commercial system serviced twice a year will last 20-25 years. One that’s never serviced will fail within 7 years — always at the worst possible time. When you’re getting quotes, ask about the maintenance contract. A contractor who installs and disappears is not the right partner for a retail business.
