Most Common Reasons a Split System Won’t Heat
- Mode is set to COOL not HEAT — check the remote. Heat mode shows a sun symbol. Cool shows a snowflake.
- Set temperature is too low — set it at least 3-4 degrees above room temperature.
- Low refrigerant — the system runs but can’t generate heat. You’ll notice it takes forever to warm the room and the airflow feels barely warm even on maximum.
- Dirty filter — restricts airflow and makes heating inefficient. Pull out the filter panel and check.
- Faulty reversing valve — the component that switches between heating and cooling mode. When this fails, the unit stays in cooling mode regardless of what you set.
- Outdoor unit fault — the outdoor unit works harder in cold weather. Ice build-up or a tripped protection switch can shut it down.
