Water dripping from your indoor air conditioning unit is one of the most common service calls we get. The good news is it’s usually a simple fix. Here’s what’s causing it and what to do.
The Most Common Cause — Blocked Drain
Air conditioners remove humidity from the air as they cool. This condensed water drains away through a drain line. When that drain line gets blocked by algae, dust, or debris, the water has nowhere to go and backs up into the unit — then drips onto your floor or ceiling.
Fix: A technician clears the drain line. This is part of a standard service. Takes about 15 minutes.
Second Cause — Dirty Filter
A blocked filter restricts airflow over the evaporator coil. The coil gets too cold, ice forms on it, and when the ice melts it produces more water than the drain can handle.
Fix: Clean or replace the filter. Check your filter every 3 months.
Third Cause — Low Refrigerant
Low refrigerant causes the coil to run too cold, leading to ice build-up and then water when it melts. If cleaning the filter doesn’t fix the leaking, low refrigerant is likely. This needs a licensed technician to diagnose and recharge.
When to Call a Technician
If cleaning the filter doesn’t stop the leak within a day, call us. A leaking unit left running can damage your ceiling, walls, or flooring. Call Jim on 0416 931 871 for same-day service across Sydney.
