‘Regas’ is one of those terms that gets thrown around a lot — but what does it actually mean, and how do you know if your system needs one?
What Is a Regas?
Air conditioners use refrigerant (commonly called ‘gas’) to transfer heat. Refrigerant doesn’t get ‘used up’ — but it can leak out through small faults in the system. A regas tops up the refrigerant level, but if the underlying leak isn’t fixed, the refrigerant will just leak out again.
Signs Your System Is Low on Refrigerant
- The system runs but barely cools or heats the room
- Ice forms on the indoor or outdoor unit
- The outdoor unit makes a hissing or bubbling noise
- The system takes much longer than it used to reach the set temperature
- Higher than usual electricity bills for the same usage
Can You Regas It Yourself?
No. In Australia, handling refrigerant requires an ARC (Australian Refrigeration Council) licence. It’s illegal to purchase or handle refrigerant without one. Always use a licensed technician.
What Does a Regas Cost in Sydney?
A regas typically costs $150–$350 depending on the refrigerant type and how much is needed. If a leak needs to be found and repaired first, add $80–$200 for leak detection. Call Jim on 0416 931 871 for an honest quote — we won’t charge you for a regas you don’t need.
