The time it takes to install an air conditioner depends on the type of system and the complexity of the installation. Here’s what to expect so you can plan around it.
Split System Installation — 2 to 4 Hours
A standard single split system install (one indoor unit, one outdoor unit) takes most experienced technicians 2-4 hours. This includes mounting the indoor unit, positioning the outdoor unit, running the refrigerant lines and electrical connections, pressure testing, and commissioning.
Multi-Head Split System — 4 to 8 Hours
Multiple indoor units connected to one outdoor unit takes longer due to running multiple sets of refrigerant lines. A 3-head system typically takes a full day.
Ducted System — 1 to 3 Days
Ducted installations are more complex. The ductwork needs to be run through the roof space, zones installed, grilles positioned, and the control system commissioned. A standard home is typically 1-2 days. Larger homes or those with difficult roof access can take up to 3 days.
What Can Slow Down an Installation?
- Difficult roof access (low pitch, no manhole)
- Long refrigerant pipe runs (outdoor unit far from indoor)
- Brick or concrete walls requiring core drilling
- Electrical upgrades needed (dedicated circuit)
- Old or complex existing ductwork
