Running your air conditioner on heating all day is expensive. These six tips reduce how hard your system needs to work — cutting your power bill and extending your AC’s lifespan.
1. Set Your Thermostat to 18–20°C
Every degree above 20°C adds roughly 10% to your running costs. 18–20°C is comfortable for most people. Don’t set it to 25°C hoping it heats faster — it doesn’t.
2. Use the Timer
Set the system to start 30 minutes before you wake up and turn off when you leave the house. You’re not paying to heat an empty house.
3. Close Doors
Heat only the rooms you’re using. Closing doors to unused rooms means the system heats a smaller volume of air faster and more efficiently.
4. Check Your Seals
Gaps under doors and around windows lose enormous amounts of heat. A $10 door seal from Bunnings can cut heating costs significantly.
5. Keep Blinds Closed at Night
Windows lose heat rapidly at night. Closing blinds and curtains creates an insulating layer that keeps warmth in.
6. Service Your AC Before Winter
A dirty filter forces your system to work harder — using more energy for less heat. Annual servicing keeps it running at peak efficiency. Call Jim on 0416 931 871.
